Dec 12, 2015 Boot.ini is the Windows XP bootloader. It has nothing to do with Windows 7 or 10. Did you previously have Windows XP in dual boot in the HDD? If you did, you may want to remove all traces of XP. Use EasyBCD with the HDD connected to edit the Boot menu and remove the Windows XP entry, or to see what entries you have, renew the boot menu, etc. There is no boot.ini in C:, i.e. The default location of the boot.ini; I can ensure I have checked the Folder Options- check 'Show hidden files & folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected & system specific files' Though it doesn't make a difference, I've tried: Start-Run- C: boot.ini OR open notepad and browse to edit C: Boot.ini.

This section describes the system startup file, SYSTEM.INI, and how to change it with the system configuration tool 'msconfig.exe'.
SYSTEM.INI was a basic startup file used in early versions of Microsoft Windows to load device drivers and the default Windows shell (Program Manager or Windows Explorer). Many of these settings were honored in Windows 9x, although the files had begun to be phased out in favor of the Windows registry. Windows XP still acknowledges some entries in the SYSTEM.INI file, to provide backwards compatibility with older 16-bit applications.
SYSTEM.INI file is located in the C:SYSTEMS directory. Here is the content of SYSTEM.INI on my Windows XP system:
If you run 'msconfig.exe' and click the SYSTEM.INI tab, you will see that all settings in system.ini are presented with checkboxes for you to turn on or off:
